Project : Measurement of indoor air quality using batch-processed nanomaterial based sensor arrays
Purpose This research is focused on the development of high-performance, low-power, ultra-compact chemical sensor based on various nanomaterials for indoor air quality monitoring. Our unique design approach and batch-fabrication technique become the fundamental for this purpose. The developed sensors can be applied to the distributed sensor network systems to monitor large area environmental informations or portable mobile systems for personal usage.
Contents The research consists of three parts; synthesis of the various nanomaterials, fabrication of the chemical sensor based on the nanomaterials, and evaluation of the detection performances of the sensors for the indoor air quality monitoring. The nanomaterials, including ZnO, WO3, Pd, and CNT, are synthesized by diverse approaches such as chemical vapor deposition, stress-induced method, template method, and hydro-thermal method. The gas detection performances can be reinforced by functionalizing the nanomaterials with different kinds of metalloporphyrins. Differently functionalized sensors array could detect the VOCs selectively using pattern recognition technique. Since all the fabrication process including synthesis of the nanomaterial is batch-process, the sensors are mass-producible.
Expected Contribution Compared to the micro and macro scale sensors, nano sensors are advantageous for their low power consumption and high sensing performance. On the other hand, the downside would be the difficulty in commercialization due to their low manufacturing yield. Our unique fabrication methods allow batch-fabrication and therefore mass production of nano sensors, and the functionalization techniques will enable selective detection of VOCs, which has never been possible before in small sensing units. It is expected that our cheap, low-power, and ultra-compact chemical sensors could successfully substitute the existing larger and complicated sensing equipments and open up novel application domains.
